Product Description

Experience the life-affirming and heart-wrenching memoir that has moved millions of readers across the globe. When Breath Becomes Air is a deeply poetic and philosophical meditation on the meaning of life, written by a brilliant young neurosurgeon facing a terminal diagnosis. At Nybookshub, we are committed to providing the most impactful contemporary literature, ensuring that every reader has access to the stories that challenge, inspire, and define the human experience.

About the Book

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a medical student obsessed with the question of what makes a virtuous and meaningful life into a neurosurgeon at Stanford, a father, and finally a patient and a dying man. This 2018 paperback edition includes the moving afterword by his wife, Lucy Kalanithi, providing a complete and poignant conclusion to Paul’s journey.

What to Expect / Why Read

If you are looking for a book that explores the intersection of science, mortality, and literature, this memoir is a must-read. You will experience Paul Kalanithi’s unique perspective as someone who operated on the seat of human identity—the brain—only to confront the fragility of his own life. The book highlights the search for meaning in the face of death and the courage required to face the unknown with grace. By following Paul’s story, you will discover a profound reflection on what makes life worth living when time is short.

Author Bio

Paul Kalanithi was a dual-degree graduate of Stanford University (B.A. and M.A. in English Literature and B.S. in Biology) and graduated cum laude from Yale School of Medicine.
